Psychologist Takes On Many Responsibilities As Owner Of A Philadelphia Outpatient Treatment Center

Many psychologists pursue their own practice at some point in their career. This means more than just having the skills of a psychologist. Dr. Marla W. Deibler, Executive Director and Licensed Clinical Psychologist from The Center for Emotional Health of Greater Philadelphia, LLC., owns and operates her own practice. She's responsible for the administrative duties, public relations and daily duties that occur at The Center for Emotional Health. Dr. Diebler shares with us how her education prepared her for a career in psychology.

Can you describe your duties as a psychologist?

"As a psychologist who owns an outpatient treatment facility, I carry out administrative, clinical and outreach duties. As an executive officer, I oversee and manage the public relations and daily functions of a nine-clinician mental health practice with two locations. As a clinical psychologist, I provide direct clinical services to patients, conducting psychological testing, psychotherapy and consultation, as well as provide clinical supervision and training."

Where did you get your degree?

"I attended college at the University of Georgia and completed a Bachelor's of Arts degree in Psychology at Rowan University. I completed a Master's of Arts degree in Clinical Psychology at the American School of Professional Psychology/Virginia Campus. And I completed my Doctorate of Psychology degree with a concentration in Health/Neuropsychology at the American School of Professional Psychology/Virginia Campus."

How has education prepared you for your career in psychology and social sciences?

"My education has given me the knowledge and skills necessary to meet licensure requirements for practice as well as to excel in providing comprehensive psychological services to those who seek my assistance."

What continuing education is required for your role?

"It is required by the state of PA that psychologists participate in 30 hours of continuing education programs, which have been approved by the American Psychological Association to provide such training. There is presently no such requirement in the state of NJ; however, legislation is currently being considered to require similar learning experiences."
