Former House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy plans to resign from Congress at the end of the year, the California Republican announced Wednesday.
"I have decided to depart the House at the end of this year to serve America in new ways," McCarthy wrote in an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal.
The formal selection process for speaker gets underway Tuesday night.
House Republicans are expected to vote behind a closed-door for the new speaker Wednesday morning before bringing the vote to the House floor.
The former House speaker said he will run for reelection in 2024.
