Teenage Girl Dies In Hit-And-Run In Lawncrest
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Police are looking for the driver who hit a young woman crossing the Roosevelt Boulevard at Adams Avenue and left her for dead. Police have identified the victim as 17-year-old Markalyah Jackson.
Authorities say they are looking for an older model minivan, possibly silver or white and 10 to 15 years old.
They say the vehicle likely has front end damage and windshield damage.
Eyewitness News is told the pedestrian was using the crosswalk, crossing with the signal when she was hit.
She was pronounced dead overnight.
Since then, police have been interviewing witnesses and searching for the hit-and-run driver.
Chief Inspector Scott Small says, "She was hit with such impact it caused her body to travel about 200 feet north after being struck."
The crash happened around 11:30 p.m. last night.
Witnesses tell police Jackson was walking with the green light when she was struck. Her body rolled onto the hood of the vehicle.
"When she was hit the impact caused her to come out of her footwear. Both of her slippers are still on the highway. Her cell phone, which was in her hand, is broken. The earrings she was wearing were actually torn from her ears."
Witnesses say the vehicle was traveling more than 40 MPH over the speed limit.
Police say it is only a matter of time before they find the driver.
"They are going to get caught. We have a description of the vehicle. We have physical evidence. We have witnesses," Small says.
