3-Year-Old Struck By Car In Northeast Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Neighbors who witnessed an accident involving a 3-year-old boy say the boy rode his bike right into the street. This afternoon, CBS 3 Reporter Jericka Duncan spoke to the man who police say was driving the van that collided with the little boy.
"We were here, riding along," said Stuart Cohen. "The kid darted out from the side."
Cohen said he was in the van with his 6-year-old granddaughter when he accidentally ran over a 3-year-old boy around 11 a.m. Monday. Small pieces from the boy's bike were still in the street near Foulkrod and Griscom in Frankford.
"The kid darted out from the side," described Cohen. "I could not see the child until it was too late."
Cohen, who lives in Frankford, said he called police immediately after the accident.
"From what the officer said, the kid's probably alright, because he was still conscious and crying," said Cohen.
Kioma Diehl says she rushed into the street to help the 3-year-old. According to Diehl, the victim's grandmother was outside watching her grandson but turned away for a split second.
"She was talking to another neighbor," Diehl explained. "She didn't see the little boy dart in the street."
The little boy, who neighbors know as Marquis, remains a St. Christopher's Hospital in stable condition, according to police.
