Year In Review: Facebook Remains World's Largest Social Network

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- KYW Newsradio is taking a look back at some of the top stories of 2014. It was a big year for Facebook. The social network retained the title of the world's largest social network with more than 1.3 billion users.
2014 was a milestone year for Facebook. It turned 10 and celebrated by giving its users a "Look Back" at their digital history on the network.
The network released new standalone apps like "Paper," "Rooms" and Snapchat competitor "Slingshot."
"Chat apps are one of Facebook's biggest challengers right now in how people are communicating through apps and online. They want to be part of the game."
Facebook acquired messaging app "WhatsApp" for $19 million, and a few weeks later bought virtual reality company Oculus Rift for $2 billion.
Facebook also angered many users this year, first with it's "emotion experiment."
"It's clearly not ethical to do what Facebook did. You have to get people's permission if you're going to put them into a research project."
And then the company's enforcement of it's real name policy
"Facebook is starting to recognize the strength of the popular entertainer, i.e drag queen in the community"
The 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil drove the most conversation on the network, becoming the most talked about event in Facebook history.
