X-Men: Apocalypse Fights To Number One At Box Office During Holiday Weekend
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- At multiplexes, the weekend's two new attractions ruled at the box office. To no one's surprise, the fantasy sequel, X-Men: Apocalypse, with Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence, led the way, earning an estimated $65-million on its debut weekend for an easy first-place finish.
The kidflick sequel, Alice Through the Looking Glass, starring Mia Wasikowska and Johnny Depp, was second with an opening weekend total of $28-million. Third was last weekend's leader, the animated comedy , The Angry Birds Movie, with $19-million.
And fourth was another sequel -- the holdover blockbuster, Captain America: Civil War, which added another $15-million to its runaway take.
Overall, industry-wide totals were a slight improvement over those of last year's Memorial Day weekend.
