Writer Speaks About Keeping It Together When Things Fall Apart
By Pat Loeb
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A New York rabbi is launching his memoir in Philadelphia this week with appearances at two local synagogues. The events are part book tour, part inspirational talk.
Rabbi Charles Sherman was living his dream in 1986 -- great family, rewarding work. And then his four-year-old son suffered a catastrophic illness and everything changed.
"People will tell you, 'put the broken pieces of your life back together,'" Sherman says. "What I've learned is, you have to live with the broken pieces of your life."
Sherman's book, wrought from 28 years of finding how to do that, is titled The Broken and the Whole. He says his story is simply a version of the challenges everyone faces and he hopes the lessons he's learned will help others.
"There are strategies to deal with the brokeness," he says, "and still be able to celebrate life and enjoy life and recognize there is meaning and there is significance."
