Workers Put Final Touches On Bucks County 9/11 Memorial
LOWER MAKEFIELD, Pa. (CBS) - Volunteers have been working feverishly over the last week to make sure the new entrance wall to the Garden of Reflection in Bucks County is finished in time for Sunday's tenth anniversary remembrance ceremony of September 11th, 2001.
Not even Hurricane Irene could stop the construction of two, 45-foot walls made of Bucks County brownstone that will now greet visitors to the official Pennsylvania memorial to the nearly three thousand people who lost their lives on 9/11.
Even Ellen Saracini, the driving force behind the memorial, helped workers pump out water last week so they could lay the foundation.
"They're out here in the rain," she told KYW Newsradio this morning. "They're making sure that this wall is completed in time for the remembrance ceremony. And when I thank them, they just look at me and kind of back up and say, 'We're honored to do this, this is where we should be, this is where we want to be.' "
The materials, the stone masons, and the time has all been donated.
On Friday, nearly three thousand flags will be put in the ground. There's a candlelight vigil on Saturday. Saracini's husband Victor was the captain of one of the planes that hit the World Trade Center.
