Want To Work From Home? It Might Be Easier Than Your Boss Thinks
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - If you had to go to work in Philadelphia during the Pope's visit, the Democratic National Convention, or despite SEPTA's ongoing Regional Rail troubles, you might wonder why you can't do your job from home.
Well, you probably can.
Some gigs require a physical presence, but if your 9-5 is defined by poring over reports, email triage, and phone calls, it may be easier than your boss believes to be untethered from the office.
Start with a plan says Scott Kinka -- chief technology officer at Evolve IP, a cloud computing company in Wayne:
"Define which applications are critical: communication, phone, email being first; file sharing probably being second; and critical application access probably third. And it can happen a lot quicker than people think in terms of deployment."
He says it only takes a couple weeks to get started, with benefits beyond those enjoyed by the rank-and-file:
"If the business doesn't embrace work-from-home, the employees are going to figure it out on their own. While that can certainly help and is a short-term function, it's also a significant security risk for the business."
Besides the technology conversation, there also needs to be a focus on management style and how to measure success when no one's at their desks.
