Work Begins On Atlantic City Regulatory Changes
TRENTON, NJ (CBS) - In Trenton, the work is beginning on making some of the regulatory changes Governor Chris Christie has called for on improving the competitive position of Atlantic City's 11 casinos.
Governor Christie's staff drafted legislation that would, in effect, transfer much of the regulatory authority now in the hands of the Casino Control Commission, an independent agency, to the Division of Gaming Enforcement, which is under executive control.
Republican Assemblyman Vincent Polistina represents Atlantic County:
"What we're gong to do is eliminate some of the duplication that occurs between the agencies, save some money and be able to put that money back into marketing."
The industry pays for the operation of both agencies.
There is a Democratic alternative that is also making the rounds at the capitol. The consensus is the two plans might be merged into one at some point, along with Christie's call for state-run casino districts along the boardwalk and in the marina. All of this would be funded by the industry.
