LOWER MERION, Pa. (CBS) -- Lower Merion Township Police say the cause of death for a woman pulled from a submerged vehicle on Sunday morning was drowning.
Police say a passerby saw the Mazda minivan sinking in the Schuylkill River just beyond the Flat Rock Park boat ramp shortly after 7 a.m. and alerted authorities.
"We located some boaters who reported they witnessed seeing the vehicle going into the water," says Gladwyne Assistant Fire Chief Chris Flanagan. "We deployed two marine units, went into the water, they were able to go into the water and break out a window and remove one victim from the automobile."
Flanagan says the vehicle was pulled from the water with a cable and winch, and secured on shore.
Police were able to determine that the victim, 44-year-old Arlene Rossi, was the only occupant of the vehicle.
Police were still trying to determine how the minivan ended up in the river.
