At Hearing, Witnesses Describe Fatal Nicetown Bar Shooting
By Tony Hanson
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Witnesses described the chaos and horror as a bar patron, kicked out for smoking, returned with a vengeance and a hail of bullets. Wayne James, 45, has been ordered to trial for killing one person and wounding five others in Nicetown last June.
Wayne James wasn't a regular at the Genesis Bar, described by the prosecutor as a Cheers-type bar where everybody knows everybody. And witnesses say he started firing from outside, fired through the door and then reached inside, still firing.
Jerrell Johnson, an EMT and volunteer firefighter, tried to hold the door closed and then turned to safety and to help other stunned patrons.
"I turned around because everybody was still standing there and I told them to get down because I didn't want nobody else to get hurt. I didn't realize (I'd been hit) until I tried to help Al right there, that's when I realized by arm wouldn't move."
The prosecutor says victim who died was a 44-year-old father of two who stopped to pick up food.
