With Two Blasts of Early Snow, Regional Skiing Gets a Flying Start
By Lynne Adkins
SPRING MOUNT, Pa. (CBS) -- Another snowy day, and people all over are complaining.
But for some, the snow is great news.
Rick Buckman, the owner of Spring Mountain Ski Resort in Montgomery County, is all smiles today. It's been cold and snowing, and for him that means ski season is getting get a good start.
"By opening on (this Thursday) the 12th," he said today, "we're more than two weeks ahead of last year. Sometimes Christmas week -- you know, between Christmas and New Year's -- can be 20 percent of our entire winter's revenue."
That was money lost last year because of the lack of snowfall and mild temperatures. This year, he notes, the temperatures have been colder than normal since mid-November, and they've been making snow since then.
