Winter Storm Brings Bone-Chilling Temperatures, High Winds
PHILADELPHIA (CBS/AP) -- The winter storm that gave much of Pennsylvania and New Jersey a fresh coat of snow is now bringing bone-chilling temperatures and high winds.
The National Weather Service says residents in the Philadelphia area woke up to a little more than an inch of snow. In New Jersey, the storm dropped up to six inches of snow in some areas, more than what forecasters initially expected from the system.
But the bigger problem was the strong, gusty winds and bitter cold that were creating subzero wind chills. Wind chill warnings are now in effect in many areas, with temperatures in the single digits to near zero expected in some areas, falling to below zero overnight, with wind chills estimated at 20 to 35 degrees below zero.
The heavy winds were blamed for downed trees and power outages across the region.
Speed limits on some highways have been reduced to 45 mph, with 25 mph speed limits on all Delaware River Port Authority bridges.
Most major roads were passable and no major travel issues were being reported. But motorists were still being urged to avoid travel if possible due to slick road conditions and blowing snow.
