Winter Skating Rink at NoLibs Piazza Will Use 'Artificial Ice'

By Hadas Kuznits

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A seasonal "ice" skating rink comes to Northern Liberties this winter.

Ruthann Francis, director of marketing and events for the Piazza at Schmidt's, says they are bringing in a 5,000-square-foot skating rink that uses artificial ice.

"It is a pop-up ice skating rink," she says.  "It's something that is brought by Artificial Ice Events.  It's put together, it is synthetic ice, but you still would use ice skates on it.  So they kind of compared it to, like, the biggest cutting board surface."

It will be situated in front of the giant outdoor video screen.

"November 30th and December 1st, it will be open to the public," Francis tells KYW Newsradio.  "December 2nd, we're having a grand opening which will consist of some live performances, a tree-lighting ceremony, winter vendors, some food trucks, and pictures with Santa.  And (the rink) will be open until February 23rd, which is the last day of the Winter Olympics."

She says the Olympics will be televised on the big screen.   The cost to skate will be $5 for adults, $3  for children, and $1 for skate rentals.  Hours of operation are Mondays through Thursdays, 4pm until 10pm;  Fridays, 4pm until 11pm; and Saturdays and Sundays, 11am until 11pm.
