Wilmington Police Investigate Spree of Car Break-ins

WILMINGTON, Del., (CBS) – Wilmington Police are investigating a car break-in spree that is leaving homeowners wondering if they'll be the next target.
Since the beginning of the month, police indicate there have been several thefts from cars in the popular Trolley Square area near North Rodney Street.
Similar break-ins have occurred in the nearby Cool Springs area as well.
Nick Barbagallo did what you're supposed to do. He hid his GPS under his seat, out of plain sight. But that wasn't enough to stop the thief from targeting his brand new Ford Taurus.
"It was just the suction cup circle that would be left behind from the GPS, and I brought it down to the glass shop and the guy told me that's what these people look for," Barbagallo said.
Along Delaware Avenue broken glass can be spotted in multiple locations as the thieves smash car windows and take what they can - as quick as they can.
"An old GPS, probably wasn't worth much, they stole that, the GPS mount, the cable, a charger for my laptop and $10 in quarters," Barbagallo said.
Authorities are stepping up their patrols in the neighborhoods. They are urging people to be on the lookout for anyone carrying a backpack late at night.
"My neighbor's car has been hit. You can see there's glass everywhere. It's ridiculous," David Levi said.
Levi's window of his pickup truck was smashed a few weeks ago.
"They stole a GPS unit. What are they going to get for it $20 at a pawn shop? It cost me $350 to replace my window," Levi said.
Police urge residents to remain vigilant and contact police if they notice suspicious subjects or activities.
Until the thieves are caught, police recommend the following tips to discourage thefts from vehicles:
- When possible park your vehicle in a well-lit area.
- Lock all doors and ensure windows are closed.
- Hide GPSs, I-Pods, or other easily removable electronic devices in the trunk, glove box, or under the seat. Remember, "out of sight, out of mind."
- Avoid leaving purses, backpacks, packages, or other items in plain view.
- Conceal any loose coins or other currency.
