Children Found Dead Inside Wilmington Home, Mother Being Questioned

WILMINGTON, Del. (CBS) -- Two young boys were found dead Monday morning inside a Wilmington home, and now police are questioning their mother.

"The children looked like they might have been drowned," said Wilmington Police Chief Robert Tracy.

Investigators were called to the home on West 9th Street near Monroe Street, where they found a 5-year-old boy and his newborn brother dead inside.

Tracy says their mother called officers to the home around 8:30 a.m.

"We are speaking with the mother to find out the details of what happened with these children, and trying to gather witnesses and as possible, and wait for a medical examiners office to really see exactly the cause of death," Tracy said.

When police arrived, they noticed a smell of gas, cleared the area, and then saw the boys dead inside.

Investigators won't say more on why they believe that the boys drowned or where the children were found in the home.

Tracy says the mother is believed to be the only one who was with was with the two little boys.

"I'll see her outside with her kids. She's usually dressed nice, the kids are usually dressed nice," said Aunjea Daniels, who lives nearby. "She looked like a happy parent, to be honest."

Police are not calling the mother a suspect, in part, because they are not officially calling this a homicide investigation yet.

The police chief did caveat that with saying  it will likely end up being that.
