Wilmington Church Destroyed By Fire Finds Temporary Home For Christmas
WILMINGTON, Del. (CBS) -- It was one week ago today that this Wilmington church went up in flames.
Now, just two days from Christmas, the pastor here has just found a temporary place to call home for the holiday.
The future though, is unclear.
Right now, he says his flock is wandering.
Everyday Pastor Eugene Brocks visits the place where his church, the New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church, burned to the ground.
The pain is still fresh.
"If anyone has lost a child to death, this feels the same way. It's painful," Brocks told Eyewitness News.
A week later, the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
This scene is easy to recall.
Drone footage, captured the moment flames devoured the decades-old church, eventually sending it crumbling to the ground.
Now only the church steps and rubble remains.
But for Pastor Brocks, there is a resolve to return specifically to Vandever Avenue.
For now though, he's found a temporary home for Christmas service and for the next four or five weeks: The YMCA on Walnut Street.
After all, Pastor Brocks says his church is not in a building, but in his heart.
A message he'll emphasize with the Christmas story on Friday for all those looking for hope.
