Willow Grove Memorial Day Parade Draws Attention To Future Monument
WILLOW GROVE, Pa. (CBS) - The VFW post in Willow Grove, Montgomery County held their annual Memorial Day service remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice defending our country, but this year the service took an added meaning.
For seven years, veterans in the Willow Grove area have been working hard to construct a new veterans monument in Veterans Memorial Park just off Routes 611 and 263. The project is beginning to come to fruition, with a flag raising dedication and the kickoff of a fundraising campaign.
Monument chairman Ralph Storti says the centerpiece will be a Bell model "Huey" helicopter mounted on a support arm, "Helicopters are synonymous of all branches of the service and basically they've been used in all wars and conflicts in defense of our country."
Storti wants to give area residents a place where they can remember the men and women who gave their lives fighting for our freedom and our future veterans. "To give people a sense and a place where they can come down and they can remember and reflect back on the sacrifices that many veterans in the past, present and future have (and will to make.)"
He hopes it will be finished by Memorial Day next year.
