Who's Happy At Work?
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - How many times have you been asked, "Are you happy with your job?"
Rainmaker Thinking, a workplace consulting firm explains why, according to a recent Mercer survey, the answers vary with age. Younger workers, defined as those under 34, are happier with their employers than their older counterparts; but less likely to stay.
Summing up the survey in The Wall Street Journal, it seems that twenty-somethings see jobs as short term and transactional.
International Business Machines Corporation, to avert potential losses, has started training programs of young staffers that expose them to diversity in geography, job responsibilities and co-workers - keeping them from getting bored.
Thermo Fisher Scientific sends new hires to three US locations over two years and three quarters of those who complete the program stay afterward. The problem is that some rotation programs work too well and young staffers enjoy the changes, expecting frequent moves.
Some people might add that having a job in today's economic climate is a plus -- wherever and whatever.
