PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Temple University hosted the 13th annual Lew Klein Alumni in the Media awards Thursday, causing the who's who in Philadelphia media to flock to North Philadelphia for the ceremony.
Actress Whoopi Goldberg received the Excellence in Media Award for her groundbreaking work on stage and on the silver screen, as well as on her daily presence on The View.
"It's always good to hear something good...for somebody to say, you're doing alright and that somebody thinks you make sense," Goldberg said.
After the ceremony, she then spent nearly an hour doing a Q and A with Temple students.
"Know what's going on. Don't take anybody's word for stuff. Check it out. Take a minute and investigate," Goldberg said.
Goldberg spoke about being a high school dropout, having dyslexia, yet finding her way in the industry by being herself in the industry and believing in her ability. The students seemed in awe of her words.
"It's just so inspiration that no matter where you go to school, no matter what your major is, you can do anything," said one student.
"Her passion and drive, she was so positive," says another student, "I love that she told us to just be ourselves."
Other Lew Klein awardees included the late E. Steven Collins and Temple alum Noah Goldstein, producer for rapper Kanye West.
