Whitpain Township Group Gets Remnant of World Trade Center For 9/11 Memorial
WHITPAIN TOWNSHIP, Pa. (CBS) - A substantial piece of the former World Trade Center was being welcomed in Montgomery County this afternoon, in an important step toward creating a 9/11 memorial.
The 12½-foot-long, 3,100-pound chunk of steel was turned over to the Second Alarmers Rescue Squad by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
Second Alarmers executive director Jamie Haddon, reached while en-route with the girder, says its first stop would be the Whitpain Township Building at about 4 p.m.
"The steel will be on display for about a week, and then we're going to put it in storage and the township is working with us to come up with the design for the memorial," he tells KYW Newsradio. "We'd like to have it in place by the fall, because this is the 10th anniversary of 9/11, and we already have about half the project funded in labor and donations."
