When The Power Is Out, Coping and Creativity Are Watchwords

MALVERN, Pa. (CBS) -- People are finding creative ways to get through life without electricity.
Many say they are using fireplaces not only for a heat source but for its illumination. Some are bringing their solar-powered walkway lights indoors to brighten things up.
As for the threat of food spoiling in the fridge, folks are using Mother Nature's icebox.
"I will put snow in the cooler to keep it cold," said Stephen Mandato of Malvern (below). "You don't need ice -- you have snow all over the place."
And would he advise simply keeping food outside if the weather is cool enough? "Well, then the animals will get it, so you need a cooler," he notes.
And many people have been charging their cell phones at area businesses or by using their car charger.
