When Kids Get A Snow Day, Working Parents Forced To Scramble

By Michelle Durham

MALVERN, Pa. (CBS) -- It's always a stress for working parents when schools are closed, trying to figure out how to care for the kids while still having to work.

Fortunately, many companies these days are offering their employees options.  Vanguard, the huge investment firm in Malvern, is one of them.

"Our crew's safety is of the utmost importance," explains spokesperson Linda Wolohan, "so we offer the flexibility to work from home -- which some have opted for today.  Others decided to take the day off."

But, Wolohan says, it's "all systems go" for customers, with the technology and their satellite offices in other states taking up the slack.

Christine Strange is one of many moms juggling a child's needs with her own job requirements.

"I am fortunate I have some flexibility, with the beauty of technology, to be able to work from home," she tells KYW Newsradio.  "But it generally does require some shuffling and some, 'Hey, it's time to be quiet, Mom has some conference calls.' "

And Gina Gorski, a mother of five school-age children in Northeast Philadelphia (top photo), had this advice:

"Have fun, be silly -- we don't get these days that often. And before you know it, your kids will be grown and they are out of the house, and you'll be craving for these times.  Put the laundry away. Go out and do snow angels with your kids. You never know when you'll get this chance again."
