What's Cooking on 1060: Summer-Themed Restaurants And Seasonal Events

By Hadas Kuznits

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Morgan's Pier, in the former Rock Lobster and Octo space on the Delaware riverfront at Spring Garden Street, just north of the Ben Franklin Bridge, opens just in time for summer.

"We have David Katz from Mémé as the consulting chef here," says co-owner Avram Hornik.

Hornik (at left in top photo) says the concept was, what would a chef serve if he was having a barbecue at his house?

"So we have things like corn and blue crab fritters, pineapple, chicken wings, popcorn shrimp, fried New Jersey tomatoes, and one of my favorites -- snack bacon," says Hornik.

Going along with that summer theme, the Havana Room opens in Northern Liberties alongside the North Shore Beach Club.

Why Cuban?

"It was something complementary to the North Shore Beach Club, which is right next door," says owner Brian Nagele.  "I wanted that tropical feel to it.  We were thinking a few other concepts, like maybe Mexican or Hawaiian, but for some reason Cuban just felt like a natural spot for us here in the Piazza area."

Fairmount Restaurant Week runs now through June 3rd.

"The prices range from about $12 up to $35," says Kevin Moran with the Fairmount Community Developement Corporation.  And he says the event was purposely scheduled to coincide with the opening of the new Barnes museum on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.

-----

"We really thought this was a great way to leverage all the visitors who will be visiting the Barnes plus all the other cultural institutions on the Parkway -- to invite them up north to Fairmount Avenue to dine like a local while they're here," Moran tells KYW Newsradio.
