PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- With spring right around the corner, McGillin's Old Ale House, at 1310 Drury Street in center city, is gearing up for St. Patrick's Day, this Sunday.

"We'll have green beer, we'll have Irish food including our famous shepherd's pie, corned beef and cabbage, Irish stew made with lamb," says owner Chris Mullins Sr. (in top photo).   "And green beer -- oh, did I say that already?  And of course our McGillin's Ale and other kinds of great microbrews."

-----

And Mullins says he loves this holiday:

"It's not just an Irish saint that we're celebrating, although that's enough to celebrate.  It's the whole idea of immigration, the melting pot, the beginning of spring!"

And speaking of spring, John Brandt-Lee of Avalon Restaurants (Avalon Restaurant in West Chester and Avalon Pasta Bistro in Downingtown) says spring is the season for food.

"Spring is the best time for the herbs, but particularly the vegetables," he tells KYW Newsradio. And he says it's a great time to support your local farmer's markets.

-----

"Spring peas are fantastic -- go right ahead and eat them raw!" Brandt-Lee says.  "Beets -- this time of year you can get the baby beets, really tender and a lot of big flavor.  Fava beans are very good.  They're going to start pulling asparagus from New Jersey and other local areas."
