What To Expect On 'The 100' Season 5 Premiere

Philadelphia (CW Philly) — Season 4 of The 100 ended with a six-year and seven-day time jump, and viewers finally get to see what happened during that period. The post-apocalyptic series returns to The CW Philly Tuesday, April 24 at 9 p.m., and during an interview with TVLine, showrunner Jason Rothenberg told viewers what they can expect from the premiere.

According to Rothenberg, the fifth season kicks off in a "very different" way, with Clarke being the focal point of the episode.

"There was a time when it was just going to be [Clarke] for the entire episode, but we chose to weave in other stories. Still, it was a bold and exciting choice for us to play with that one character for that amount of time. It was a great challenge for [actress] Eliza Taylor, but we knew she could handle it," Rothenberg said.

More specifically, the premiere "tracks Clarke's emotional journey over [the six-year time jump] really nicely," Rothenberg said.

Rothenberg also elaborated on Clarke's close relationship with Madi.

"She's obviously not a biological mother, but she has such an emotional connection to this child," he explained. "She now has a clan of one. In that way, everything has changed for her. She's always recognized that the things she does are done for her people, even though they're fairly hard choices she has to make to keep her people alive — just like people on the other side have made similarly difficult choices to keep their people alive," Rothenberg continued.
