1,000 Acres Burning At Wharton State Forest
BURLINGTON COUNTY, N.J. (CBS)-- Crews continue to battle a massive forest fire in Wharton State Forest in New Jersey Friday that started on Thursday afternoon.
It's happening just a few miles north of Batsto Village.
Chopper 3 was over the scene showing the smoke billowing from the forest for miles.
Rob Geist, with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection says the fire has burned 1,000 acres, but it's within a 3,500 acres "containment area".
It's at 31% containment at this time although crews have 0% control on the fire, said Geist.
Dozens of firefighters from across the region have been assisting with extinguishing the blaze.
Geist says crews will attack the from the outside and then go within.
The Batona Trail was closed early today in the forest due to the location of the fire.
Authorities are urging anyone planning on coming to the state park on Friday to check the website because some trails may be impacted.
No injuries have been reported.
Officials at the state forest say no evacuations have been ordered.
