West Philly Residents Retrieve Some Belongings From Burned Apartments

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - There's progress of a sort for some former residents of the Windermere Court Apartments in West Philadelphia.  They have lost their home due to fire (see related story and photos), but can at least get some of their belongings back.

As the water department dug to fix a pipe under 48th Street near Market, a few people milled around the gate that stood between them and the heavily damaged apartment building.  The January 10th fire destroyed the top floor of the building, which is across the street from West Philadelphia High School.

The apartment building was to be torn down this week, but an outcry from former residents put that on hold (see previous story).

On Wednesday, former resident Wilfred Bailey clutched what Windermere employees had recovered for him.

"I just get some of my stuff.  I don't get everything, but I'll make out with what I got, thank God.  I get my main thing, my Bible," he said.

Issues involving the demolition of the building remain unsettled.
