West Philly Charter School Destroyed By Fire
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - There will be no classes all week at a West Philadelphia elementary school after fire gutted the building on Sunday.
The five-alarm fire ripped through the Global Leadership Academy Charter School in the 5100 block of Warren Street in the city's Parkside section. Crews arrived on the scene just before 6:00 a.m. after a police officer noticed flames coming from the building.
Investigators believe the fire started in a section of the basement that was under construction. The flames quickly spread and caused one section of the four-story building to collapse.
There were no reported injuries.
Officials said the building is a total loss. The Philadelphia School District is offering the site of the former W.S. Peirce School as the charter school's temporary location.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
