West Chester Officials Plan 'Quiet Zones' To Head Off Rowdiness Around University

WEST CHESTER, Pa. (CBS) -- The borough council in West Chester, Pa. is expected to vote tomorrow night to designate some neighborhoods around the university as "quiet zones."
Peace and quiet can be a precious commodity when you live near a big university with thousands of college students. Now, Borough Council is considering mounting more than 200 signs along sixty blocks in the southeast section of the town, reminding people to dial down the noise between 9pm and 7am.
Violations would carry a $250 fine.
"It will be educational, it will be a reminder," West Chester mayor Carolyn Comitta told KYW Newsradio today. "It may be a deterrent because the fine is $250, but people need to be reminded."
She says the borough works very closely with the university when it comes to quality-of-life issues, and this would be just one more tool designed to prevent rowdiness on the borough's streets and ensure that permanent residents and student residents can get a good night's sleep.
