Weekend Box Office: 'Thor' Hammers The Competition
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The comic book-inspired fantasy epic Thor kicked off the official summer movie season with a big opening weekend, earning an estimated $66 million to capture the box office crown.
Last weekend's leader, the action thriller Fast Five, dropped to second with a still-robust $33 million.
The third and fourth slots belonged to two new romantic comedies that finished in a virtual tie.
Something Borrowed, starring Kate Hudson and Ginnifer Goodwin, and the wedding comedy, Jumping the Broom, with Angela Bassett and Loretta Devine, each earned in the neighborhood of $13 million.
Holding down fifth place was the holdover animated attraction Rio, with $8 million.
Overall, it was a second straight strong weekend, the first time that has happened in 2011, and a good sign as the summer movie season heats up.
