By Bill Wine
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Fury stormed ahead and won the box office battle, one of three new titles to earn over $10-million and crack the top five.
The World War II drama starring Brad Pitt took in an estimated $24-million to finish first on its debut weekend.
That dropped the leader of the last two weekends, Gone Girl, to the runner-up spot with a total of $18-million.
Third belonged to the new animated attraction, The Book of Life, with $17-million.
Fourth was the family-comedy holdover, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day with $12-million.
And fifth was the debuting romantic drama based on the Nicholas Sparks novel, The Best Of Me, with James Marsden and Michelle Monaghan. It earned $10-million.
Overall, it was another strong October weekend with industry-wide totals well beyond those of a year ago.
