Weekend Box Office Report: Star Wars Blast Its Way To The Top
By Bill Wine
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Force is certainly still with Star Wars.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the seventh episode in the beloved Star Wars science fiction franchise, blasted its way into the record books by earning an estimated $238-million on its highly anticipated – and, it turns out – triumphant weekend debut.
That's the biggest opening weekend – by plenty -- in movie history.
Second place went to the new kid flick, Alvin and the Chipmunks: Road Chip, which took in $14-million.
And in third place was Sisters, the debuting counter programming comedy starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. It totaled $13-million.
How big an opening was this for Star Wars: The Force Awakens? Its take was nearly five times as much as that of all of the weekend's other attractions combined.
Now that's out of this world.
