Weekend Box Office Report: Captain America Reigns Supreme
By Bill Wine
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The box office leader remained the same on this movie weekend.
Last week it was Captain America that captured America.
This weekend it still is.
After setting a record for an April opening, the fantasy sequel, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, made it two weekends in a row on top of the box-office heap by earning an estimated $41-million.
The next three slots were filled by new mainstream releases.
The close runnerup was also a sequel, the animated followup, Rio 2.
It took in a strong $39-million.
Third place belonged to the horror thriller, Oculus, with a total of $12-million.
And fourth place went to Draft Day, the debuting football-themed drama starring Kevin Costner.
It earned just under $10-million.
Overall, industry-wide totals were well ahead of those of the counterpart weekend last year.
