Weekend Box Office: 'Rango' Takes Home $38 Million
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Rango is dancing the box office tango.
The animated western comedy Rango, featuring the lead voice of Johnny Depp, put an end, or at least a temporary stoppage, to this year's ticket-selling slump by earning an estimated $38 million on its debut weekend.
A solid second place went to The Adjustment Bureau, the new supernatural romantic thriller with Matt Damon and Emily Blunt, which was well behind the leader but with a nonetheless healthy $21 million.
Third place also went to a third new title Beastly, the teen updating of the Beauty and the Beast fairy tale. It took in $10 million.
Overall, March's first weekend was a welcome return to form for the industry-wide box office after two subpar months in which new release after new release failed to catch on with moviegoers.
