Weekend Box Office: Narnia Comes Out On Top
(CBS) - The third trip to Narnia may well be the last.
The third installment in the series of fantasy epics, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, finished first at the box office in its debut, earning an estimated and disappointing $25 million. This could signal the end of the series, as each successive amply budgeted outing has earned significantly less than its predecessor in its debut.
The Tourist, despite the star power provided by Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp, could only manage second place taking in a modest $17 million in its weekend debut.
The animated holdover Tangled was third with $15 million which movedit over the $100 million mark.
No other title topped the $9 million mark in what was a soft opening for the holiday movie season which was no surprise. There are expectations that things will pick up over the next few weeks as the high-profile attractions open.
