Weekend Box Office: 'Hop' To The Top
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - In one of the strongest box office showings of the year to date, Hop raced to a first-place finish.
The Easter Bunny comedy for kids, a mix of live action and animation featuring the voice of Russell Brand, earned an estimated $38 million in its weekend debut.
Second place was held down by another new release Source Code, the high-tech science fiction thriller starring Jake Gyllenhaal. It took in $15 million on its initial weekend.
Third was the weekend's other new mainstream release, the horror thriller Insidious, with $14 million.
That dropped last weekend's leader, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules, all the way down to the fourth spot with a second-weekend total of $10 million.
The holdover Limitless rounded out the top five with $9 million.
Overall, industry-wide ticket sales were respectable, but totals were well short of those on the counterpart weekend last year.
