Wednesday's Child: Alexis Finds A Home
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Every week, we bring you stories of children looking for a home. But this holiday season, we present the story of one girl, Alexis, who spent years in foster care before finding a family.
When her soon-to-be parents, Adam and Lanier, first met Alexis, they knew that love -- unconditional love -- would make a difference, even though they knew there would be challenges.
(Lanier:) "She wasn't used to structure. Not only was she in different homes, she was in different group homes. Through time... it's a healing process, and that's what she needed. She needed that love and that nurturing to show her that she is loved regardless of her behaviors."
But now, Alexis and her parents are truly a love story, where adoption has made a difference. And Alexis, with a permanent home, is looking forward to a bright future.
(Larry Kane:) "What do you want to do?"
(Alexis:) "I want to be an obstetrician."
(Kane:) "You want to deliver babies?"
(Alexis:) "Yes."
(Kane:) "Wow, you must like children. Tell me about that."
(Alexis:) "Helping out with my little sister and my cousin -- I really like it."
Something else she likes to do is cheerleading.
(Alexis:) "We do, like, flips and stuff, and work on our jumps and our routines."
(Kane:) "Is it a lot of fun?"
(Alexis:) "Uh-huh."
Gloria Hochman of the National Adoption Center, who works with us on Wednesday's Child, says Alexis' story is especially inspiring.
"It's very difficult when somebody's been in as many foster homes as Alexis has been in," Hochman told KYW Newsradio, "because you begin to lose hope. So, it's very exciting that she has a home."
