Weather: Soggy Midweek

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- After a beautiful weekend and dry start to the week, payback comes today.
The next mid latitude cyclone will bring rain to most of the region. Some of it will be heavy, and there will also be embedded thunderstorms later today.

Some of these storms could be strong in nature. Temperatures are going to be well below average, failing to get out of the 70s.Wednesday will be a mixed day as this system pulls away. Clouds and rain will tapper off from west to east, which means the Jersey Shore will be the last to dry out.
Once the rain is over, you can expect a generally dry and nice end to the week. Temperatures will remain below average, making it feel more like early September at times.

1856 - The records of the PA hospital say that a tornado un-roofed or destroyed more than 150 houses, chiefly in the northern part of Philadelphia.
1901 - 3" of rain fell in 40 minutes during the morning at Rancocas, NJ (Burl. Co.)
1928 - A hurricane moved into central FL then re-curved to the NE as a tropical storm over GA. It passed just to the south of Delaware as an extratropical depression. Philadelphia measured a gust of 54 mph from the NE, the strongest wind recorded in 1928. Heavy rain accompanied the storm, with Philly receiving 1.37".
1955 - Hurricane Connie moved N across the NC outer banks, then curved NW as a tropical storm up the Chesapeake Bay and into the Great Lakes. The storm brought torrential rains, with Philly receiving 3.29", a daily record, on the 12th and 2.15" on the 13th, ending the summer drought. Up to 12" fell in the Poconos, saturating the ground, filling the streams, and setting the stage for disaster within the week when another storm. Diane, moved in. Atlantic City gusted to 70 mph, and Philly had sustained winds on the 13th of 67 mph, the highest for August, along with a gust to 73 mph. All gusts were the strongest winds measured at those places in 1955. The pressure at PHL dropped to 29.41", the 2nd lowest Aug reading.
2000 - 3.08" of rain fell in 45 minutes between 1:35 pm and 2:20 pm at Willingboro, NJ (Burl. Co.). A similar event occurred in the same region 99 years before.
2001 - Overnight rains to 8.4" in Sussex Co, DE, led to failure of a dam on Hearns Pond during the early AM. Historic Hearns and Rawlings Mills were heavily damaged, along with roads and buildings, with damage at $1.1 million.
