Weather Concerns Move Up E-Z Pass Work On Turnpike
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- A forecast of heavy rain has spurred the New Jersey Turnpike Authority to move up the start of a project to make E-ZPass available in every lane at turnpike interchanges.
The work was due to start at 10:30 p.m. Saturday at Interchange 1 and continue north until it was completed Sunday. But the authority said Friday that it was going to start Friday night instead so it could get done before the rain arrives late Saturday.
The toll road is converting all 136 cash lanes at the 28 interchanges to accept both cash and E-ZPass. The work involves installing signs and rebooting computers in each toll lane.
Transportation Commissioner James Simpson says the change should make driving less stressful for E-ZPass customers because they'll no longer need to change lanes.
