PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Yes, we made it and just as important, SUMMER MADE IT! The longest and maybe most welcome day of the year started early this Saturday – at 6:51 a.m. – with summer's arrival. Why that specific time? This is the moment when the sun shines directly on the Tropic of Cancer or the imaginary latitude line 23° 26' north of the Equator. Philadelphia receives 15 hours and 38 seconds of welcome daylight today. By comparison cities like Fairbanks, Reykjavik, Oulu, and Arkhangelsk will all see over 21 hours of daylight with sunset times after midnight and sunrise times before 3 a.m.
Despite the summer solstice, temperatures are only expected to top off in the 70s throughout the region on Saturday – very close to 80 degrees, however, because of some clouds and an easterly (onshore) wind. A stationary front to the south during the day is bringing a few showers west and south of Philadelphia. But never fear - skies will clear tomorrow and temperatures will climb to the low to mid 80's.
