Weather Blog: Heat, Humidity & A Strawberry Moon Mark Start Of Summertime
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Hot and more humid conditions are in the forecast and they arrive right on schedule, as Astronomical Summer officially arrives tonight.
The Summer Solstice, which occurs at 6:34 p.m. tonight, marks the start of Astronomical Summer. This is when the Sun reaches is farthest point North at the Tropic of Cancer. The Sun's ray are at their strongest this time of year in the northern hemisphere, since the northern hemisphere is tilted towards the Sun.
This setup also gives us the most amount of daylight of the year, as the Sun sets at 8:33 p.m. tonight, just over 15 hours of daylight. After today, the daylight length decreases.
Another event happening tonight is a full moon. A full moon on the Summer Solstice has a special name called Strawberry Moon. This was named for strawberry season, since this time of year is prime strawberry picking season.
This will be the first Strawberry Moon since 1967.
