WB Schuylkill At 30th Street Reopened After Tractor Trailer Causes Greasy Mess

By Jim Melwert, Nicole Brewer

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - An accident shut down the westbound Schuylkill Expressway for several hours Wednesday.

A tractor-trailer was trying to exit from I-76 west onto the Vine Street Expressway in the tunnel near 30th Street when the tail end of the trailer tipped over and split on the median, the divider between the exit and highway. The cab of the truck was not damaged, but the trailer looked like a shredded can.

It was carrying boxes of cooking shortening, and that material covered the median and the roadway like a baking pan.  A front-end loader was spinning its wheels on the greased-up asphalt as the operator attempted to scoop up the discarded boxes.

The accident happened at about 11 p.m. Tuesday closing the highway for 12 hours. Just before 11 a.m. the ramp from I-76 W to I-676 E reopened. The right lane on I-76 west approaching the ramp remained closed until about 3 p.m., reopening just in time for the evening commute.
