Wayward Tire Damages Top Of Building In Grays Ferry
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A tire came loose from a truck on the Schuylkill Expressway, hit a car and then careened into the roof of a building located off the highway, police said.
The incident happened at about 9:45 a.m. Monday in the 1900 block of Vare Avenue in Grays Ferry.
According to investigators, the tire somehow came loose from a truck, a hit a Honda and then ricocheted into the roof of an administration building for the Philadelphia Housing Authority.
Approximately 30 PHA workers were inside the building at the time, but no one was injured.
"It appears that it was a freak accident," PHA executive director Kelvin Jeremiah said.
Workers with the PHA were sent home for the day as crews worked to fix a gas leak and patch the approximately six-foot hole in the roof.
The Fire Department, Licenses and Inspections, as well as PGW were on the scene investigating the bizarre incident.
The driver of the Honda that was initially hit by the wayward tire was seven months pregnant and was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania as a precaution.
Authorities say the driver of the truck did not stop and possibly didn't even know a tire came loose.
The incident remains under investigation.
