Roosevelt Boulevard Reopens After Water Main Break Shut Down Southbound Outer Lanes
By Al Novack and Jim Melwert
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The outer southbound lanes of the Roosevelt Boulevard were closed for several hours while crews repaired the damage leftover from a water main break in the Northeast that caused serious traffic headaches. Traffic problems continued most of the day Friday.
The 12-inch water main on Woodward Street broke at about 2 a.m., forcing police to shut down several roads in the area.
There were several local detours, but the major one was the southbound Roosevelt Boulevard outer lanes, which were closed at Winchester, the first major intersection you get to after Welsh Road. The actual water main break happened just above Pennypack Creek.
The water was turned off and crews worked to repair the road.
The inner lanes remained open while the outer lanes were being forced to turn right onto Winchester, wind back up to Bustleton Avenue then down to Strahle. Drivers headed south on the Boulevard were urged to get into the inner lanes before Welsh, or use alternate routes.
