Walt Whitman Bridge Construction Reaches Critical Phase
By David Madden
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Commuters have probably noticed that the morning traffic on the Walt Whitman Bridge is backed up a little more than usual. An ongoing redecking project has reached a critical phase.
There's really no way around this one. Crews are working on the center lane of the seven lane bridge, according to Delaware River Port Authority spokesman Tim Ireland.
"This part of the project was planned for summer because, traditionally, rush hours are a little less hectic.
Ireland expects this phase to be completed by November, although there is a financial incentive in place for crews to get it done sooner. Once that's done, the movable barrier can be used again to improve traffic flow.
