Temple's Bowl Foe, Wake Forest, Fires Announcer For Providing Information To Opponents

WINSTON SALEM, N.C. (CBS) -- A Wake Forest football radio announcer is now out of a job after the school concluded an investigation that they say proves he shared confidential game preparation information with opponents.

Wake Forest's next opponent happens to be the Temple Owls who they will face in the upcoming Military Bowl on December 27.

The school announced that the investigation of Tommy Elrod began after a game against Louisville on November 12. The school says that the investigation was not limited to just the Louisville game.

Based on emails, text messages and phone records, the school concluded that the former player and current announcer gave, or tried to give, confidential and proprietary game preparations to opponents dating back to 2014. The school added that no members of the athletics department, the coaching staff or players were involved.

Elrod played for Wake Forest from 1993-1997. He served as a graduate assistant and held multiple job titles with the team over 11 seasons. In 2014, he became a football analyst for the team on Wake Forest IMG Radio Network.

Wake Forest Director of Athletics Ron Wellman released the following statement:

"I have known Tommy Elrod since his days as a player on our football team. I'm deeply disappointed that he would act against Wake Forest, our football team and our fans in such a harmful manner by compromising confidential game preparation information. It is a relief that the team can move forward without his actions further undermining the positive strides Dave Clawson, his staff and the team have made. All of us are now preparing for final exams and the Military Bowl and continuing to build an outstanding football program."

Elrod has been fired and banned from Wake Forest athletics and facilities.
