Vote Delayed On Privatizing New Jersey Toll Collections
TRENTON, N.J. (CBS) - The New Jersey Turnpike Authority has postponed today's scheduled vote on a plan to privatize toll collection on the turnpike and the Garden State Parkway. But the issue is far from dead.
Unions representing some 800 full and part-time collectors say they've made far more in contract concessions than management asked for…but they have heard nothing in response. So why the postponement? Turnpike Authority spokesman Tom Feeney says a staff committee evaluating 4 privatization bids asked for more information.
"That information just arrived on Monday," Feeney said. "The committee just didn't feel like they had time to process that, to evaluate it and to make an informed recommendation to our Commissioners."
The vote is now expected no later than the next authority meeting on May 24th. Feeney says, if privatization is approved, the delay will not affect implementation expected just after the July 4th holiday rush.
