Volunteers Serve Gourmet Dinner To Homeless In Philly
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Nearly 200 homeless Philadelphians were treated to a full-course gourmet dinner Sunday evening made possible by an online fundraiser.
More than 130 volunteers packed into the 23rd Street Armory to serve guests everything from short ribs and pasta to lobster and pastries.
"It genuinely makes me cry to look and see how many people care and how many people were given the chance to do something good and stepped up to the plate, went over and above what they normally do to make somebody else happy," said Jason Pinardo, who started the $20,ooo GoFundMe campaign on a Sunday and was halfway to his goal by the following Wednesday.
"We took just under three weeks to put it all together," he said.
Aya spent part of her afternoon serving fellow homeless people:
"I always wanted to have some positive friends in my life. I found a whole bunch of them today and it feels good to be able to hand a person a pair of socks because someone is always on the other side of the table handing something to me."
The guests were also given clothes, shoes, and bookbags with toiletries and gift cards.
